What Is The Month Version Of Anniversary

PSA: Your Ane-Month 'Anniversary' Is Not Really An Anniversary

"Anniversary" is the 'annual recurring of a past date event' " (source: dictionary.com)

Allow's proceed this short and sweetness, shall we? At present I will acknowledge up front end that I'yard perfectly comfortable correcting the grammer of people I know (and random strangers on the internet, I'm only human.) I will also admit that I have besides made errors myself (once again, just homo.) Still, due to my honey of linguistic communication and linguistics, once I discover out a rule that helps fill up the void within me, I will let you lot know.

Confused? I don't blame you. And so for example, a skillful friend of mine tweeted something mildly mind-blowing the other twenty-four hours. The word 'slang' stands for shortened language… therefore slang is slang! Now mayhap that was obvious, in which example I apologize. Maybe information technology's non fifty-fifty true, I probably should check, merely I love the idea of it too much to risk thwarting.

However, a new pet peeve of mine that I have certainly indulged in at many points throughout time, is that of the "anniversary." I have no qualms with you lot having an ceremony, go right on ahead! Merely practice you use information technology correctly? Welcome to anniversary 101!

The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word anniversary as:

The date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year.

Now, do tell me, have you ever wished your other half a 'happy ane month ceremony'? I hate to tell you, but that doesn't exist…

Simply put, anniversary is based on the Latin "annum" pregnant "year." If we want to celebrate a an event that recurs each calendar month, y'all should plough to the Latin word, mensis. That means that your "one calendar month anniversary" is actually your mensiversary. Welcome to language!

MEN-SI-VER-SA-RY (mèn´se-vûr´se-rê) substantive
1. The monthly recurring date of a past event, specially one of historical, national, or personal importance: a first date mensiversary; the mensiversary of the founding of Nerstone Pictures.
2. A celebration commemorating such a date. from Latin: mensis, calendar month + versus, past participle of vertere, to plow.

And even so, Merriam-Webster'southward Collegiate Dictionary (11th ed.) defines 'anniversary' every bit:

The annual recurrence of a date marking a notable upshot; broadly: a date that follows such an event by a specified menstruation of time measured in units other than years.

This is a neologism! It's similar having selfie in the dictionary, so please, be technical and correct.

If anyone calls you lot a prude or a geek, take it in your step and be the best pedant you can exist. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
